In 1072, a medieval scholar named Mahmud Kashgari — from, as his name suggests, the Silk Road outpost of Kashgar — presented a landmark text to the Caliph of Baghdad. It was the first ever compendium of the Turkish language, the babble of tongues spoken by nomadic tribes who roamed between the shores of the Caspian Sea and the wastes of Siberia. Despite the scope of his work, Kashgari was proudest of his hometown, boasting that the Turkic dialect there was the "purest" and "most elegant" of them all.

CA-NEWS (KZ) - Almaty local authorities allowed Uyghur Cultural Center to stage a rally in support of Uyghurs over riots in China.

The rally will be held on Sunday from 10.30 to 12.00 am.

No special security measures are planned. Police officers will be there to maintain public order as normally during such public events, Almaty local authorities said.

The funeral service took place on July 10 outside Almaty over Uyghurs, who died in the riots in China. Uyghurs of Kazakhstan announced 40-day-mourning in connection with tragic events in Urumqi. Weddings and other celebrations are cancelled.

Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen: Thank you for inviting
me to this Oslo Freedom Forum. It’s an honor to stand here speaking
to you today. The film, On a Tightrope, is portraying Uyghur
children at an orphanage in northwestern China. On a Tightrope was
directed by Petr Lom and produced by Piraya Film of Norway, in
corporation with Rafto Foundation.
The film shows how China is actively promoting the sinification of
Uyghurs whereby cultural, linguistic, and religious aspects of
Uyghur culture are outlawed, banned, or otherwise discouraged. The
eight to ten million Uyghurs is one of the Turkic ethnic groups
living in the northwestern region of present China. The Uyghurs call
their homeland East Turkistan. The official Chinese name of the
region is Xinjiang. It literally means “new territory” in the
Chinese language. The predominantly Muslim Uyghurs face a similar
plight as the Tibetans, but they have never enjoyed anything like
the global sympathy extended to their next-door neighbors.
Today, I will tell you the story of Mrs. Rebiya Kadeer. She was
awarded the 2004 Rafto Prize while still in prison. By her people,
she is recognized as the mother of all Uyghurs.

Mrs. Kadeer is a moral pillar, a woman of truth and self sacrifice
who has made it her life’s work to alert the world about the
suffering of the Uyghur people.
During the 1960s and 70s, life was extremely hard for the Uyghur

On Sunday, July 5 in the provincial capital of Urumqi, Xinjiang, North West China, a peaceful demonstration led by unarmed Uyghur students was brutally suppressed by baton wielding police touching off a full scale race riot between the indigenous ethnic Uyghur minority and the majority Han population. The official government media reports at least 156 dead and 1,000 wounded. These numbers are reported to be mostly Han Chinese. The number of Uyghurs killed or wounded was not even reported, though eye witness accounts indicate those numbers to be very substantial, possibly in the hundreds. Official numbers for those detained are said to be 1,400 -- almost all members of the Uyghur community. The actual number is likely many times higher. True independant reporting is not allowed in the region, and it is widely known that the Chinese government news media dileberately distorts facts to serve its own interests.
It is our sincere desire that these events will serve to open the eyes of the international community to the true nature of the Chinese government's brutality and harsh suppression of even the most basic of human rights for the Uyghur people of Xinjiang province. While the official Chinese propaganda directed at the West claims to support human rights and respect cultural diversity, the facts of these recent events tell a very different story.
There are approximately 10 million Uyghurs living in Xinjiang, which has been their historic homeland for hundreds of years. Uyghurs speak a Turkic dialect completely unrelated to the Chinese language and have their own unique culture. The majority are Sunni Muslims.
During the past few years, tensions have been increasing due to a government program of forced assimilation of Uyghurs into mainstream Han Chinese culture. Elimination of the Uyghur language from schools, dillution of Uyghur communities through aggressive relocation of millions of Han Chinese from inner China, massive racial discrimination in hiring practices, and random arrests on trumped charges are just a few of the many factors leading to the July 5 unrest.
We, the Uyghur people, appeal to you as members of the world community to join us in our struggle for freedom from oppression and discrimination. Please let your voice be heard on our behalf. Please alert your government leaders to the true nature of China's brutal treatment of our people.

Noen av faktorene som forårsaket uroen den 5. juli er blant annet at det uighurske språket blir presset ut av skolen, lokale uighursamfunn blir ”vannet ut” av millioner av Han-kinesere som flyttes til provinsen gjennom myndighetenes aktive omplasseringsprogram, uighurer opplever grov rasediskriminering når de søker på jobber, og mange uighurer blir tilfeldig arrestert basert på falske anklager.
